I have had sharptails in my hand ... dead ones. I have never seen the males wooing on the lekking grounds. The chicken dance of the North American Indian, photos and nature films tindered a concept. To do justice to this native bird, much research was required. A trip to the Alberta Natural History Museum, 150 miles away, resulted in another dead sharptail in hand. The feathers around the air sacs were ... are ... interesting. So too the feathered legs and feet. The grouse has been entered into competition. At one event the bird received the following comment from an attendee. "It looks just like the birds I see in my pasture." At another event it was awarded Carvers Choice. These honours are cause for the blue ribbon to pale. |
