Encounters with these beauties occurred while working in the mountains. Sea ducks for most of the year, they move to fast flowing mountain streams in the Spring. It is here they breed. The males being with the female for only that time. Then it is back to the salt for them. The drab female does all the rearing. One young was lodged in a net we employed to section a stream study. It was little more than a ball of fluff with a head and bill. Few prairie folk have the fortune of a Harlequin encounter. I am thankful that I have.
